This event is open to Pastors and their spouses who serve in the Evangelical Covenant Church of Canada.

We all come to our Fall Retreat needing different things. Some years call for careful study, some for rest and reflection, some for sharpening a skill. Rather than trying to cover these important topics every year, we have decided to move to a simple three-year rhythm—one theme each fall, giving us more time to explore a single theme.

A New Retreat Rhythm

WORD

SOUL

CALL

The scripture-focused year.

The spiritual formation year.

The ministry-equipping year.

This coming fall (2026), we will begin with WORD, the scripture-focused theme and spend time reflecting and sitting with a particular text. In addition to these central themes, our time together will still include a good measure of worship, prayer, and connection. And, we look forward to it!

Romans 6

2026 THEME TEXT

Dead to Sin, Alive to God in Christ:
Romans 6 for the Life of the Church

Romans 6 is one of the most important texts on Christian living, conversion, and baptism, and it is foundational for Christian ethics. It profoundly challenges widespread cultural assumptions in the West about individual autonomy and what it means to be authentically human. It also challenges believers to live up to their gospel and its implications.

Stephen will share material from his recently published book in the Baker Touchstone Texts series on Romans 6 that he co-authored with Klyne Snodgrass (also formerly on the faculty of North Park Seminary).

GUEST SPEAKER
Stephen Chester

Stephen has taught New Testament at Wycliffe College since 2019. He was previously a member of faculty at North Park Theological Seminary, Chicago (2006-2019) and International Christian College, Glasgow (1999-2006). Originally from Liverpool, England, he also lived for significant periods in both Wales and Scotland before moving to the United States. Stephen’s research interests focus on Pauline theology, especially the history of reception of Paul’s texts in the Reformation era. They also include conversion in the ancient world and the theological interpretation of Scripture. Stephen is married to Betsy and they have two adult sons, Iain and Mark. Stephen enjoys reading both detective fiction, especially if set in Scotland, and historical studies, mainly of the medieval period. He also enjoys following his favorite sports teams: Liverpool and Partick Thistle (football) and Lancashire (cricket). He has a long-standing interest in urban ministry and mission and has been formed by having been a long-term member of two small city churches: Ruchazie Parish Church, Glasgow (Church of Scotland) and Immanuel Evangelical Covenant Church, Chicago.
